Bystander may lose an eye after drive-by shooting

Kansas City police were looking Friday for a gunman who shot a rival Thursday in a drive-by shooting and also hit a 59-year-old innocent bystander. The bystander suffered a wound to his face that might cause him to lose an eye, police said. His condition remained critical Friday. The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. Thursday on 44th Street near Tracy Avenue. The bystander lived in the neighborhood and was out for a walk when he encountered a 34-year-old neighbor who is known for causing trouble, said Police Sgt. Martin Cobbinah. The bystander stopped to talk to the neighbor because “he’s a good guy, a stand-up guy, and he’s friendly to everybody,” Cobbinah said. As they talked, a vehicle drove by and an occupant opened fire, wounding both men. The bystander suffered more serious injuries than the other victim. Police said they were following good information from witnesses. “The neighbors on that street were pretty upset because they know he didn’t do anything to deserve this,” Cobbinah said.
